Project Overview

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) experienced application problems following an automated desktop software update affecting its Lotus Notes environment.

The resulting support requests created a backlog of incidents involving client software and application databases.

I joined a small specialist contractor team tasked with investigating and resolving these issues, working alongside internal support staff.

Technical Challenges

Diagnosing Problems Remotely

Many affected users required assistance without an engineer being physically present at their workstation.

Resolving incidents involved remotely investigating individual client environments, understanding the reported symptoms and identifying the underlying cause.

Client Configuration and Compatibility

The desktop software deployment had introduced an incorrect DLL into the Lotus Notes client environment. Replacing this component was necessary to resolve the underlying client-side fault.

However, the problem had also caused data corruption in some of the applications accessed by affected users. These incidents required additional investigation and repair beyond simply replacing the DLL.

Application Database Problems

Not every incident could be resolved by repairing the desktop client. Some required investigation and correction of issues within individual Notes application databases.

This meant distinguishing client-side failures from application-specific problems rather than treating every incident as the same fault.

Engineering Approach

Systematic Fault Investigation

I investigated reported symptoms, examined affected client environments and worked to identify the specific cause of each incident.

Remote Client Repair

I remotely investigated affected workstations and replaced the problematic DLL to correct the client-side fault. This was a necessary step in resolving each affected client's issues.

Database Investigation and Remediation

Where the faulty client component had also caused application data corruption, I investigated the affected Notes databases and carried out the necessary repairs to restore correct application behaviour.

Collaboration with Internal Support

I worked alongside the organisation's internal support staff, contributing specialist application knowledge and assisting with the resolution of outstanding incidents.

Result

The engagement helped address a backlog of application support incidents caused by a problematic desktop software deployment.

By identifying and replacing the faulty client component, repairing resulting application data corruption where necessary, and working alongside internal support staff, I contributed to restoring application operation for affected users.

The project demonstrates an ability to investigate unfamiliar technical problems, distinguish between different failure causes and deliver practical solutions in a live enterprise environment.
