Project Overview

Thomson Reuters required data to be migrated from an established Lotus Notes/Domino environment into an Oracle relational database.

The source and destination platforms used different approaches to data storage, creating challenges in extracting, transforming and loading application data.

Working as a Migration Architect, I developed a Java-based Domino agent to extract and transfer data into Oracle, using staging tables and database triggers to populate the target relational data model.

Technical Challenges

Different Data Models

Lotus Notes/Domino applications use a document-oriented data model, while Oracle stores information in relational tables.

Moving between these platforms required an approach that could accommodate the source documents while supporting the structure required by the destination database.

Separating Extraction from Transformation

Rather than attempting to map all source data directly into the final relational structure, the migration used intermediate Oracle staging tables.

This separated the process of transferring source data from the database-side logic responsible for populating the target tables.

Data Integrity and Troubleshooting

Migrating between different database platforms required careful investigation of data structures, transformation behaviour and migration errors.

Debugging and data validation formed part of the development and migration work.

Engineering Approach

Java Migration Utilities

I developed a Java-based Domino server agent to extract data directly from the legacy Domino databases and transfer it into Oracle staging tables using JDBC.

Oracle Staging Tables

Extracted information was loaded into intermediate staging tables, providing a structured entry point for the migration.

Database-Side Transformation

Oracle database triggers were used to transform staged information into the normalised relational structure required by the destination system.

This approach divided responsibilities between the Java migration utilities and the database-side transformation logic.

Result

The engagement produced Java migration tooling and database transformation components supporting the movement of legacy Domino application data into an Oracle relational structure.

The project demonstrates experience in cross-platform data migration, Java/JDBC development, relational database design considerations and troubleshooting complex enterprise data conversions.
