Legacy Application Modernisation
TNT
Analysing, maintaining and modernising a portfolio of enterprise business applications, including migration planning, integration and technical handover.
Project Overview
TNT operated a substantial portfolio of legacy business applications supporting established operational processes. Understanding the purpose, dependencies and technical condition of these applications was essential to determining how they should be maintained, modernised or retired.
As a consultant developer, I worked on application analysis, maintenance, integration and migration preparation, helping to assess existing systems and support their ongoing operation.
Technical Challenges
Understanding the Application Portfolio
A key challenge was establishing a reliable understanding of the existing application landscape, including application functionality, dependencies and opportunities for consolidation or retirement.
Application inventory and analysis techniques were used to investigate existing systems and identify applications requiring remediation, migration or continued support.
Working with Legacy Systems
Existing applications had to be understood and maintained while supporting ongoing business operations. This required investigating unfamiliar implementations, diagnosing problems and identifying practical changes without unnecessarily disrupting established processes.
Integration with Other Platforms
The engagement also involved developing and maintaining integrations between individual legacy applications and external enterprise systems. This included Salesforce integration for one application and SMS gateway integration for another. The work required understanding existing application behaviour, data structures and external interfaces.
Engineering Approach
I used application inventory and analysis tools, including TeamStudio Analyzer and custom utilities, to examine the existing application portfolio.
The resulting information supported decisions about application retirement, migration, remediation and ongoing maintenance.
Alongside this analysis, I carried out application development and troubleshooting work, including integration with external business systems using Java and related technologies.
Technical documentation and handover were important aspects of the engagement, helping preserve knowledge of the existing systems and support subsequent maintenance activities.
Technologies & Skills
Result
The engagement contributed to a clearer understanding of TNT's legacy application portfolio and the work required to maintain, modernise or retire individual systems.
Application analysis, integration development, remediation and technical documentation supported ongoing operations and future migration and handover activities.
